Once, after yet another exam with no clinical evidence of infection, she left to get her prescription pad and was considering whether to treat my symptoms as a cold instead of a sinus infection. While she was out of the office, I had to blow my nose. For reasons that I could not explain, I kept the tissue and showed her the contents when she came back into the room. The evidence in the tissue showed clearly a serious sinus infection and prompted her to send me to an Infectious Disease specialist. Throughout my treatment with the ID specialist, I continued to bring in “samples” of particularly disgusting drainage. These samples helped the doctor understand what I was dealing with and allowed him to adjust my treatment as necessary. ~ M.
