Fathers and Stepfathers Can Experience Postpartum Depression
While
it is more common to associate Postpartum Depression (PPD) with mothers,
new fathers and, in particular, step fathers, can also experience
PPD. While the symptoms can be the same, the Nemours Foundation notes
that fathers and stepfathers are more likely to experience PPD if
they are:
- with a partner who's depressed
- ending their relationship with the mother
- in a physically aggressive relationship
with the new mother
The best thing to do for fathers experiencing PPD is to first and foremost,
recognize the depression and help your wife recognize that you are experiencing
PPD so that you can go through treatment together. Acknowledging that men
can and do experience postpartum depression is the first step in getting
appropriate treatment for it and getting your family back on track.
