After controversy between Van Buren and presidential hopeful John C. Calhoun, Van Buren was appointed Vice President in Jackson’s re-election. Van Buren was the first president born a US citizen. During his reign as president, hundreds of banks and businesses failed and the country fell into a deep depression.
