Information: President John Tyler was the first Vice President
to be moved up to the office of President
by the death
of his predecessor. A firm believer in the Constitution, he was
against most nationalist legislation and voted against the Missouri
Compromise while a member of the House of Representatives. While
president, Tyler vetoed plans for a national bank and, after
vetoing a tariff bill, he was threatened with impeachment by
both the Whigs
and the Democratic party.
