wanted to act as a representative of the common man during
his presidency. A slave owner in his mansion near Nashville,
he became the first man in Tennessee to be elected to the House
of Representatives. While in office as president, two parties
formed: the Democratic Republicans were pro-Jackson and the
Whigs were anti-Jackson. Jackson relied on his power to veto
as a policy-making technique, rather than adhere to congress,
causing great political upset and strong rivalries between
political parties.
