United Kingdom Facts About Geography, Climate, and Resources

Current Geography of the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is located in Western Europe. It is a group of islands lying between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. These islands northwest of France mainly consist of England, Scotland, Wales, and the northern one-sixth of the island of Ireland, named Northern Ireland. The area also contains the Shetland Islands, Rockall Islands Hebrides, and the Orkney Islands.

If you were to compare the United Kingdom to the size of the United States, its size would be slightly smaller than the state of Oregon. The total area size of land in the United Kingdom equals 241,590 sq km, with a total water area size that equals 3,230 sq km, for a combined overall total area size that equals 244,820 sq km.

The only country that borders the United Kingdom is Ireland, with a land border reaching 360 km. The United Kingdom coastline stretches out across 12,429 km. The terrain of the United Kingdom consists of mostly rugged hills and low mountains with level to rolling plains in east and southeast. The highest point in the United Kingdom is Ben Nevis, which reaches up to 1,343 meters, while the lowest point is The Fens at negative 4 meters.

The Climate of the United Kingdom
The climate of the United Kingdom is typically rather temperate and is moderated by southwest winds over the North Atlantic Current. While it is typically a moderate climate with more than one-half of the days being overcast, natural hazards such as winter windstorms and floods can occur.

The United Kingdom’s Natural Resources
The land of the UK consists of almost 24 percent arable land and provides such natural resources as coal, petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, lead, zinc, gold, tin, limestone, salt, clay, chalk, gypsum, potash, silica sand, and slate.

Other Unique Facts
The United Kingdom lies near vital North Atlantic sea lanes, only 35 km from France. It is now linked to France by tunnel under the English Channel. Due to the UK’s heavily indented coastline, no location is more than 125 km from tidal waters.
