Studies have shown that air quality problems are apparent in both newer and older homes. Older homes are breeding grounds for mold and mildew. Newer homes with high efficiency windows have less fresh air entering, which diminishes air quality. Without the proper exchange of non-contaminated outdoor air, a build-up of indoor air pollutants and moisture can occur. Furthermore, the inside of homes that have been flooded by heavy rains are especially vulnerable to high levels of pollutants due to elevated moisture levels. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air levels of many pollutants may be 2 – 5 times higher than outdoor levels, and occasionally even higher. Inhaling irritants such as dust mites, mold, animal dander, mildew, tobacco smoke and pollen carries many health hazards including allergic reactions, asthma, headaches and upper respiratory discomfort. Also, long-term excessive exposure to these irritants increases the risk of developing an allergy and, in some cases, potentially life-threatening diseases such as cancer. Breathing fresh air is not only important to good health but it also stimulates and rejuvenates the mind and mental state, according to Clean Air Essentials, a company specializing in dehumidifiers, air purifiers, and filters. There is no practical way to completely eliminate indoor irritants, but they can be controlled by reducing indoor moisture. The growth of indoor irritating pollutants can be minimized by reducing indoor humidity to 30 – 50% using a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers function to remove moisture from the air, which subsequently inhibits their growth. Air purifiers can also dramatically reduce indoor air pollutants and create healthier and more comfortable indoor environments, which is important for individuals’ well-being. They are efficient in removing dust, pollen, smoke, plant and mold spores, mildew and fungus, animal dander and other irritants that cause respiratory illnesses. An air purifier is invaluable, especially in a smoking or moist environment. » Sponsor: PariPharma's eFlow
